This book has three of Premchand’s most loved short stories. We meet Hamid, a poor boy, in Idgah as he heads to the fairground on the festival of Id. We see that his pockets are empty of money but his heart is full of love and understanding. Buddhu the shepherd and Jhingoor the farmer in Mukti Marg get involved in a fight and take revenge on each other. Will their evil deeds bring them satisfaction or make them regret their mistakes? In Panch Parmeshwar, lifelong friends, Jumman Sheikh and Algu Choudhary come face to face with questions of friendship, loyalty and responsibility.

Even worse, she sprains her ankle and finds herself at the mercy of Prandaan-Pishashe who the children have been teasing unmercifully. What happens to Lakshmi that day in the forest is the story.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream

Retold by Helen Street || Illustrated by Charly Cheung

Format: 13 (w) X 19.7 (h) cm || Pages: 64 || ISBN 978-81-264-3297-4 || Price: Rs. 95.00

Mischief is in the air when the King and Queen of the Fairies quarrel and Puck is left in charge of the love potion. Four young people are lost in the woods on midsummer’s night. Will they find each other and true love, or will Puck’s meddling leave them broken-hearted and alone? A band of players prepares to entertain the Duke of Athens. But now that the fairies have made a donkey out of their leading man, will Quince and the others ever get to play their parts? Is there time to put everything right before this magical night is over?

It is our delight to introduce, for the very first time in India, 5000-word retellings of William Shakespeare’s best-known plays in verse. Published in collaboration with RealReads, our publishing partner from the UK, these retellings are written in a language similar to Shakespeare’s; very little is lost in retelling! Retold magnificently by Helen Street and illustrated stylishly by Charly Cheung, these four plays are suited best for school theatre as well as reading for pleasure.

Tara Tambe, Forest Friend!

Then Tara gets sent a mysterious box, and some unlikely – and unwelcome – guests show up! A lesson in ‘wild’ manners? Or just a bad dream? Join Tara and her friends in this charmingly illustrated, roller-coaster-ride of a story…

A Pie Surprise and Other Stories

Written by Shobha Tharoor Srinivasan || Illustrated by Aditi Deo

Format: 13 (w) X 19.7 (h) cm || Pages: 32 || ISBN 978-81-264-2946-2 || Price: Rs. 60.00

Whether it is Ramu on the streets of Calcutta, or Bob in a Massachusetts suburb, or Anansi in a West African village, the stories describe children who think about someone other than themselves.  The stories teach that giving is not only the prerogative of the privileged, but instead is an example of the sincere human desire in all of us to provide and gift and bring joy to another.

We hope that these stories inspire our young readers to share the bounty in their lives with those who may not be as fortunate.

They give us a glimpse into the life, values and ideals of a country and suddenly the country becomes no stranger to us. The armadillo has but one wish in life, to sing. And he is willing to sacrifice anything to gain that gift. The two young orphans endure a life of hardship and finally, they receive nothing other than divine aid. The young cowherd too receives the kindness he deserves after a tough time spent in misery. Beautiful folktales from Latin America, wonderfully retold, charmingly illustrated!

What will the time traveller learn about the future? Will he survive the evil he encounters? Even if he can find his stolen machine, will it return him safely home? What does his future hold? What is the future of the human race?

Shakuntalam

Format: 13 (w) X 19.7 (h) cm|| Pages: 64|| ISBN 978-81-264-2901-1 || Price: Rs. 95.00

A love so intense, a curse so cruel, a fate so tragic. Can true love outlive the pain of separation?

The meeting between the brave King Dushyanta and the sublime naive beauty Shakuntala has been pre-ordained. She would give him the long awaited heir to his throne, a son. But when the time of their parting beckons, little do the lovers know that their only means of being re-united lies in the royal ring that Dushyanta gives Shakuntala. Love’s journey is never simple. Misguided by destiny, Shakuntala is pursued by curses and abandonment as she leaves her hermitage home to be re-united with her husband and King. Is the King’s love so fickle that he forgets her so quickly? Or is he in the grip of some terrible curse? How long must Shakuntala wait for recognition? And will the King lose his only son?

Reborn with Mango Classics’ subtle illustrations and poetic retelling, Shakuntalam is the great Indian poet Kalidasa’s epic play of love won and lost and finally regained.

Forthcoming title… Rani Lakshmibai

December 16, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comment

 ‘Stop!’ the Rani shouted as loudly as she could. ‘Stay and fight! We can defeat the enemy!’

A girl born in an ordinary family, catapulted into an entirely new world with her marriage to the Maharaja of Jhansi, Rani Lakshmibai’s life has elements of the fairy tale in it. And yet, the young Rani is remembered today not so much for her role as a queen, as the courage she displayed in taking on the British army, in order to claim her right to the kingdom. Rani Lakshmibai is probably the most inspiring and enduring image of the Uprising of 1857 in the minds of Indians, and has come to stand for courage and a steely determination. Celebrated in books, songs and films, Rani Lakshmibai’s life is an inspiration to women today, just as she was in her lifetime.

Mango Classics bring to you a brand new book on the life of the brave warrior queen, Rani Lakshmibai of Jhansi! The book will soon be in stores.

New Release from Mango – Meerabai

November 15, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comment

The door to her room was opened. It was time to leave. The maid who entered the room, stood rooted at the sight of the princess and the idol of her blue god. Soon the rest of the royal household assembled.

 ‘Meera, what is this childishness?’ asked her grandfather tersely. ‘It is time to leave. The auspicious hour is approaching.’ But Meera would not or could not hear him. She was almost nearing the end of the ritual.

Can devotion and love be so pristine that one may dissolve in them?

Meera, the young princess of Merta, once asked her mother, when her bridegroom would come to meet her. Her mother tells her that Lord Krishna was her groom. A casual joke cracked by her mother makes a huge impact on Meera’s life. From that day onwards Meera dedicates herself to serve Lord Krishna. Her devotion cuts her off from this world and transfers her to a spiritual realm which could not be comprehended by many of her relatives.

Written by our acclaimed author Vinita Ramchandani, Meerabai narrates Meera’s journey, her dedication and strength which cast a spell on a generation.

Coming soon…..The Haunted School and Other Stories

October 31, 2011 · Posted in Uncategorized · Comment

I tried to tell myself that I was imagining things but it was no good. There was something evil in the room and I was determined to find it…There was nothing out of the ordinary anywhere but as I bent in front of the bedside table, the glass of water on it shimmered, as if with the force of some movement. I looked up quickly, my heart thumping but saw only the water in the glass. And yet, I had been sure of something lurking there…”
